One of the review articles at this same website says 'A Fender Stratocaster is a Fender Stratocaster', implying that we buy the USA-made version because of snob value and, as such, to safeguard resale value, when in fact, the cheaper Mexican model sounds and feels virtually the same.
Much can similarly be said of the premium and supposed 'custom-shop' models, in that we will often pay for a name like Fender, Gibson and PRS in preference to a UK custom shop guitar that would actually be hand-made, be a better instrument all round, better value for money and a better quality build.
What we forget is that the majority of the named 'custom shop' guitars are actually factory produced guitars that get finished by hand with some added extras, or equipped to resemble a vintage model, in order to set them apart and justify the higher price tag. It's only when you pay the £7k+ price tags with the big boys that you might actually get a predominantly hand-built instrument.

The thing is, in the UK we have some great custom guitar builders that we rarely hear about because they don't spend a fortune advertising in the guitar press and therefore rarely get editorial coverage. Given the quality of their workmanship we really should be supporting them. With their wealth of experience these companies will give advice on materials and hardware to achieve just the sound you are looking for and you'll get an instrument unique to you into the bargain.
So just what can you get for the money at a UK custom shop? Well from what we've discovered you can have your own custom, hand-built guitar manufactured to your own precise spec for the same price as a custom shop Strat, or a mid to top-range Les Paul or PRS. So take a look and think outside the box if you are thinking of spending out on a custom-made, or high-end guitar - why have an 'also ran' for an instrument when you could have a guitar that has a piece of your soul built into it?
