   Resonators
Resonator (also known as resophonic and amplifonic) guitars where originally developed to allow the sound of a slide guitar to be heard above the noise of the band. They also  slightly emulated the sound of an Hawaiian guitar, which were all the rage at the time. The resonator works by virtue of a specially designed metal cone(s), usually made of aluminium, which amplifies the sound. Today resonators can be purchased in their original form or in an electric version. These guitars give a unique, almost jangly, sound, favoured by blues artists.
