I love this job me I do!
The only down side is I don't get paid - but the upside is I get to play a huge range of top guitars, and this time the guitar I'm reviewing is a Schecter Blackhawk, that is going to be given away in the January 08 GuitarMart prize draw!
Whoa!
Well, first impressions are positive. It arrived with all its original packaging unopened as pure as the day it left the factory. This is an encouraging sign because it means the Manufacturer - Schecter - is confident of their quality control and haven't singled this guitar out as 'best of the batch' for review purposes only.
And confident they should be, as this item is not only flawlessly made it is visually stunning in its black gloss finish, contrasting chrome hardware and contours that (for fear of offending the politically correct) I can only describe as down right 'sexy'.
I come from the 'less is more' school of thought and love the minimalist no-nonsense approach Schecter have adopted with this model. It has two uncovered humbuckers, one volume control, one tone control and a 3 way pickup selector switch.
Looks-wise it is an out-and-out rocker's dream guitar. But sound wise? Lets give it a try?
Nothing about this guitar suggests it should be played through anything other than a loud amplifier with a lot of gain. It is an uncompromising rock guitar that doesn't set out to be versatile! So I didn't bother messing about with small amps, instead I offered it straight up to the beast (aka my Marshall JCM900 half stack).
Well I can honestly say this guitar really kicks some serious ass! I don't think the Marshall amp's valves have sweated so much (or have had such an enjoyable workout) in years!
This guitar is not a jack-of-all-trades, it is master of one. It won't necessarily appeal to the jazz musician, blues purest or country musician but it will keep any aspiring rock god more than happy - especially if you like vintage rock and thrash metal.
I gave the Blackhawk one long last appreciative look before putting it back in its box knowing it will soon be 'winging' (pun intended) its way to someone out there and making New Year 2008 very memorable indeed.
The Schecter Blackhawk has a recommended retail price of around £225 - the best web deal we could find was Sound Control, where you can currently buy for £169 (posted 26/11/07)
