Gibson ES 165 Herb Ellis (1991)

The ES 165 is a classic jazz box modelled on the single
pickup version of the ES 175 as played by Herb Ellis. The guitar features a 24¾
inch scale while the slim rounded neck has 20 frets and joins the body at the
14th fret. The bound fingerboard is rosewood with parallelogram markers.

Like the ES-175, the body is fully hollow with two internal
lateral braces and measures 16 inches across the lower bout and 3½ inches at
the outer rims. The top and back material consists of a maple/poplar/maple
laminate.

Hardware comprises the usual trapeze tailpiece and
Tune-O-Matic bridge mounted on a rosewood base. The components are gold plated
including tulip type Grover machine heads.

The pickup is a 490R humbucker with one volume and one tone
control.

This early model does not have the Herb Ellis signature on
the headstock. This embellishment did not appear until after November 1991.
Also the tailpiece is not the zig-zag type featured on later versions.

The low fast action has been set up professionally. The
general condition of the instrument is excellent but there is the odd nick here
and there. The sound is what you would expect from a  jazz guitar: rich and rounded. It is
especially good for chord melody and chunky chord playing.

The gold plating is worn on the pickup cover but the rest of
the plating is in good condition.

The guitar comes with the original Gibson case which is
fully functional. However, the handle needs a little attention.

The original bill of sale is included, placing the purchase
in October 1991.

Serial number 92461492 confirms the place and date of
manufacture:- Nashville Plant, TN, USA on September 3rd, 1991,
Production Number: 192.

This is a rare instrument and is nearer to Herb Ellis’s
original than later versions with the floating pickup.

I don’t want to ship a guitar of this quality, so it’s cash
and collect only.
