Dave Gregory Custom Semi-acoustic Archtop

Looking for an unusual and unique instrument? Look nofurther.

This is a one off custom guitar built for me by Dave Gregoryin 2001.

The guitar is based around the idea of an ES 335 but doesnot have the centre block. Instead, it has a pair of 3/4inch wide mahogany strips running the length of the body and joining the top tothe back. This structure minimises feedback while retaining the essentialacoustic character of the instrument.

Specification:

Body: Top is carved spruce; back and sides are maple. Theback is also carved: no laminates here. Dimensions: 16 inch wide and 111/16inch deep at the edge.

Neck: One piece mahogany. In cross section, it has a roundedD shape very reminiscent of a 1970s Gibson.

Fingerboard: Ebony. 12 inch radius. 22 frets.

Headstock: Ebony facing.

Scale length: 243/4 inch.

Machine heads: Gotoh 18:1 ratio.

Bridge: Tunomatic sitting on a pinned rosewood base.

Tailpiece: Nickel plated trapeze.

Pickup: Single Seymour Duncan Seth Lover; nickel finish.

Controls: One volume; one tone.

Hard case: Hiscox 335 type.

The sound is typical clean jazz in tone and is very good forrecording owing to the purity of the sound. Action is on the low side andcomplemented by low fat frets. With only one pickup, setting up the sound issimplicity itself. Backing off the volume does the usual thing of cutting thetreble, so combining this with use of the tone pot and EQ on the amplifier soongives you the sound you want.
